Apple to re-enter the sub-notebook market

3.jpgThis new tiny MacBook, people familiar with the project say, remains in development ahead of its target launch date around the time WWDC rolls around mid-year. It will be both lighter and more compact than any other Mac portable Apple has put forth in recent years, bundling a display of similarly smaller proportions.
Also setting the new model aside from its existing counterparts, those same people say, may be the conspicuous absence of an optical disc drive. Although Apple’s original plans for the notebook called for its inclusion, reports are that the daunting ergonomics have recently driven company engineers to make a concession, forming yet another parallel between the new notebook and the defunct PowerBook 2400.
At the same time, the new MacBook model is expected to introduce some features not yet available with Apple’s existing notebook offerings, such as onboard NAND flash. Plans reportedly call for the notebook to be the first of the company’s MacBook offerings to utilize the solid-state memory in order to improve power efficiency and facilitate near instantaneous boot times. This feature, however, had not been frozen upon last check.

ASUS Lamborghini VX2 speeds out of the gate

21.jpgWith top-of-the-line components and next-generation wireless radio, the ASUS Lamborghini VX2 looks ready to set new speed records.
Based on the high-end T7400 Core 2 Duo processor, which pumps out 2.16GHz of raw computing power, the latest race car-inspired 15.4-inch laptop uses the gaming standard 512MB Nvidia GeForce Go 7700 graphics card, previously seen in the ASUS G1, for pure visual pleasure. It also uses a draft-N Wi-Fi radio, the fastest wireless standard currently in use.
Other notable features include a swivel Webcam, 160GB harddisk, DVI connectivity and Windows Vista Ultimate Edition operating system. Too bad it’s rather stingy with USB ports, offering a mere three slots to plug your peripherals in.
The ASUS Lamborghini VX2 should be seeing daylight some time in early Q2, with a retail price set at a whopping S$4,888 (US$3,109.81). Still, at least there is no road tax needed for this little baby.

Microsoft’s official women’s laptop bags!!

33.jpgIf Steve Jobs had anything to say about it, any “official laptop bag” created by Microsoft would probably be a giant fanny pack in ’80s-style Day-Glo colors that was desperately trying to be cool. Just imagine it worn by John “I’m a PC” Hodgman. But remember, Vista has made Microsoft cool. (They wine-and-dined us at Cipriani, after all.) So, Ballmer & co. have commissioned luggage manufacturer Samsill to create its official laptop bags geared toward female customers, as recently seen on ShinyShiny. They might not be real leather (poly with accents of “leather-look vinyl”) but they still look pretty stylish. The three styles, called the “Madison,” “Manhattan,” and “Monticello” (from left to right in the image) range in price from $50 to $70. And though they’re specifically “ladies’” bags, I think your average hardcore metrosexual could get away with the Monticello.
They’ll be available on Amazon.com starting on the 15th, so unfortunately, you won’t be able to grab one as a Valentine’s Day gift. Maybe that’s a good thing.
